The World Economic Forum says that even before COVID-19, there was high growth in education technology, with global edtech investments reaching US$18.66 billion in 2019 and the overall market for online education projected to reach $350 Billion by 2025.
Change is the only constant The aftermath of COVID-19 has been tragic. Every sector of the economy was badly hit, including the education sector. Since education must be imparted at all times, the world saw the mushrooming of smart classes for schools to achieve uninterrupted learning. The entire ecosystem of schools needed transformation to facilitate not just unhindered learning but quality education too. The learning pedagogy in the schools has witnessed a shift and this transformation will continue in the times to come. The system will not evolve until an efficient learning system is put in place; a system that will be more resilient during the crisis. This will also require the teachers to become adept in using the new technology to conduct classes in smart schools successfully. It would lead to more personalised attention and no student will feel left out. Online vs. Offline Learning We can’t predict at this moment whether the future of learning is going to be completely offline or online. Offline learning has its advantages such as personalised attention, interactive learning in groups, and enhancement of cognitive skills due to interaction with fellow peers in the real world. On the other hand, online learning has advantages such as remote learning is possible from the comfort of your home or anywhere in the world. It uses audio-visual resources that stimulate better learning experiences in a world that’s already tech-savvy. Therefore, we need to maintain a fine balance between the two. Offline learning in physical classrooms should be integrated with online learning so that children can reap the benefits of both. Blended learning creates optimum synergy between both worlds- which is not a luxury but a necessity in the times we live in. This is also expected to mitigate the learning pace woes of the students. As they won’t be entirely dependent on the teacher for their learning. They can learn at their own pace by referring back to the recorded lesson plans whenever in doubt. This model is highly effective and makes students self-reliant. Future: Smart class in schools The future of education lies in blending online and offline learning in schools. While teachers get equipped with innovative tools and methods, students get access to interesting and engaging content that is more fun than traditional learning. With the help of services such as email forums and chatrooms, there is holistic interaction between the stakeholders – students, teachers, parents, management, and principal. As the communication gap gets blur, the outcomes are effective leading to better results. The blended learning model ensures learning at all times. It’s time to provide smart education to 21st-century kids without any learning gaps.
